Traveling My Way Cochem Germany

View of Cochem Germany from Pinnerkreuz

Recently Rosita and I visited Cochem Germany for 3 days and 4 nights. This is how we spent our time there. I think we hit most of the high spots and we had a great time here. We arrived in Cochem, Germany a little after noon on Sat Sept 23. The railroad station was a little further from our hotel than I thought it would be but it didn’t take us quite 30 minutes each rolling a suitcase to reach the hotel, so not a bad walk at at all.

The Hotel Germania is our home for 4 nights in Cochem. It is a small hotel with a lot of character and I highly recommend it if you visit Cochem. The breakfast that was included was very good. It would shame the breakfast offerings in most hotels that I have stayed in in the US. The bacon tasted like bacon back home, which is not something I can say about some of my other European breakfasts. The staff here have been very pleasant for the whole stay. And no, I did not tell them I was going to include them in this article.

Cochem City Streets

The first day we just walked around a little and took in a few shops. There is a very diverse option for shopping. There are Many different types of shops to go through. There are shops for clothes. You can by a leader Hosen outfit to celebrate Octoberfest, Wine shops are everywhere, cuckoo clocks are here. We have tried most of the gelato shops here and they all meet with my approval. Bakeries are everywhere and the ones we have tried, everything is delicious. We ate lunch at the Union Hotel Restaurant and I had my first authentic wiener schnitzel. I don’t see how all Germans don’t weigh 300 plus pounds.

Reichsburg Castle

Reichsburg Castle

The second day here we had a great breakfast at Hotel Germania and headed out to Reichsburg Castle and had a great time there. We made it there just in time for an English speaking tour. There are more tours in German and if you can’t make an English tour you can go on a German speaking tour and they will give you a sheet of paper in English so you can follow along. But to me the most powerful presence of the castle is that it sits on a mountain over the city and it is has a most magnificence view from anywhere in the city. As I write this I am sitting on my balcony of the Hotel Germania and the castle is sitting right in front of me. It is beautiful to look at and I have been writing this paragraph for at least 2 hours because I will just stop and stare at it. It is worth the trip to come here just to gaze at this wonderful site. It is also worth the tour of the castle for the views there. There are amazing views of Cochem and upriver that you can’t see from Cochem.

Next we went to the Senfmühle, the mustard facory. You can taste the many different flavors of mustard that they have. Here you will find that there is more to mustard than French’s yellow mustard and brown mustard. It is worth the visit just to sample a bratwurst with your favorite mustard. They have mustards that they founded dating back to the 1500’s. We didn’t get there in time for tour but enjoyed our visit there

Next we went on the Sasselbon, which is a chairlift to the top of a local look out point, Pinnerkreuz, for some fantastic views of Cochem and the Moselle River. The last time Rosita I were on a chairlift was about 5 years ago in the Colorado Rockies. Then we had a rough time getting off of the chairlift and then we had on snow skis and had a rough time. This time was much easier and worked out okay. Anyway the views on the ride up and down and at the top were worth trip up.

On our 2nd full day we left the area for a cruise on the Rhine River. I will go over this in a separate article. On our 3rd and last day we took things much easier. We got up and enjoyed another great breakfast at the Hotel Germania. We then toook a tour of Cochem on the Cochem City train. it was a great way to tour the city and see some of the sights. Then we just wandered around the city & shopped, dined & people watched.

All in all it was a great visit and Cochem is a great city to enjoy some time away froml the rat race and see some amazing sites .

I was stationed at Buchel AFB near Cochem from 1969- 1971, the base was a German military training base and we were a detachment out of Hahn Air Force Base which is also closed now. Absolutely loved my 3 years here and the village of Cochem and the great wine and food and people.
