If you are looking for things to do in Bruges, Belgium, keep reading and I believe you will find a few things that will make your trip to Bruges or Brugge, as the locals spell it, enjoyable.  Rosita and I had the good fortune to spend a few days in this wonderful city which is the largest city of the province of West Flanders in the northwest part of the country.

Here are 6 things to do in Bruges. I am breaking it down into my top 3 and Rosita’s 3 things to do while in Bruges.   We have made a video that you can watch where Rosita and I talk about and show you our top 6 things.   You can go to our U-Tube channel to see it.

Bruges Markt

Rosita’s first

favorite thing:

Go out and walk around the streets.

It is an old city with beautiful old buildings that have been there for hundreds of years. Rosita loved looking at and appreciating the details of the architecture of the buildings.

Joe’s first

favorite thing:

Get up early and go explore the city.

I’ll take a spinoff of Rosita’s.  We arrived in Bruges late in the day, walked from the train station to our B&B and then walked to have supper and got a taste of what Bruges had to offer.  We were tired from traveling all day from the US to Europe so we returned to the B&B and turned in early.  When the sun rose at 6:30 AM the next morning we were wide awake and decided to go out and walk around the city and begin exploring it.  The only people out were workers and a few people going to work on bicycles.  This was a great way to start our visit there as we were able to get a lay of the land without the crowds of people and locate the landmarks that we wanted to visit that day.  Rosita enjoyed finding lace and chocolate shops that she wanted to return to.

Rosita’s second

favorite thing:

Climbing to the top of the Historium building tower.

We had misunderstood someone and went to this building to buy tickets to climb the much more famous Belfry tower.  We found out the Historium Tower is about half the height of the Belfry.  I am afraid of heights so this tower worked out good for us.  We did not meet anyone going up or down and we had heard that meeting people on the Belfry stairs can make the climb difficult. If you are in front of the Belfry looking out at the Bruges Markt you can see the Historium building with its tower to your right.

Salvador Dali Museum

Joe’s second

favorite thing:

Spend a day going through museums.

We visited the Salvador Dali Museum and also the Picasso Museum. These are two great artists that are well worth the time to see their works. Salvador Dali was alive during most of my life and his early works are very interesting. I found out a lot about him that I did not know.   We had planned to go the hospital museum but ran out of time. This museum showed how hospitals treated patients in the 1400s and 1500s.

Rosita’s third

favorite thing:

Our Bed and Breakfast, Huis ‘t Schaep.

Or House of Sheep is a great place with lots of character to stay.  The Building is over 300 years old. A Stained-Glass artist lived there and it was his workshop. He made stained glass and did tile work. It is a beautiful building and they only have four rooms. We booked early and got upgraded to the Suite. We had a large bedroom and a large living or sitting room. The bathroom was very large with a separate toilet room. Mike is a great host, full of knowledge of the area and his wife Nadia is an excellent chef. If you stay here don’t miss breakfast!

Joe’s Third

favorite Thing:

Take a Canal boat tour in Bruges.

The tours take 30 minutes and you see some of the city that you can’t see from the streets. They are crowded and long lines form later in the day. I suggest getting to the launch site around 11:00 AM when the tours start running and the lines are the shortest.  There is only one boat company doing tours so don’t waste your time comparing prices.

I love all of your favorite things. I love walking the street and if you do it early in the morning you get to see what the local’s lives are really like. It gives you a sense of what it’s like to live there. I love exploring like that.

  2. Hazel says:

Bruges (or Brugge as the locals call it in their native Flemish language) is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. I agree with all of your list of things to do in Brugge but personally I would add the great cafe culture as number 7. Eating, drinking and being merry is part of the local culture.

    • Joe Henley says:

Hello Hazel, Thank You for visiting and your comments. I agree with you on great cafe culture. We had some great meals in Bruges and that might be the topic of an upcoming article.

  4. Hi Rosita & Joe,

Thank you for the nice review about Bruges. I also enjoyed watching your video. The next time you are in Belgium, you could perhaps visit Ghent? I am sure you will like it too. Regards

Thank you for reading and viewing our first video. We did visit Ghent on a day trip while we were in Bruges and an article will be coming soon. We had a great time in Ghent.
